Single or Multiple Re-Entry Permit: Compare Your Actual Travel Plans

When a re-entry permit is needed to preserve your current permission, choose the option using your travel plans and the time remaining on that permission. The permit does not create an extra period of stay.

Start with the underlying permission

Check the latest permission end date and the trips you intend to make before it. Do not compare permit options against a year of travel if the permission you want to preserve ends sooner.

Compare one departure with several departures

Immigration’s public guidance provides single and multiple re-entry options. A single option concerns one return under its conditions; a multiple option supports repeated travel within its applicable validity. Confirm the option and current charges at the office handling the application.

Use a simple travel worksheet

  • Current permission-to-stay end date.
  • Each planned departure and return.
  • Whether the permission remains valid for every return.
  • The permit option and its conditions.
  • Any renewal or follow-up appointment between trips.

If a return falls after the permission ends, address that timing first. A more expensive permit does not solve an expired underlying permission.

Arrange the procedure before leaving

Check the required passport evidence, form, photograph and current application location. Confirm any airport-service assumption before relying on it. Keep a copy of the issued permit with your permission record.

Frequently asked questions

Does a multiple re-entry permit renew my stay each time?

No. It preserves the relevant existing permission under its conditions rather than adding a new stay period.

Should everyone buy the multiple option?

Compare the actual trips within the remaining permission period and confirm the applicable procedure first.
