Changing Schools on an Education Stay: Questions to Resolve Before Moving

Updated October 30, 2026.

Changing schools while holding an education stay needs a coordinated plan for the current enrollment, the new course and the immigration record. Paying the new institution does not automatically transfer the basis of your existing permission. Start the discussion before withdrawing from the present school or assuming that its documents will remain available.

I would establish the final study date, current permission end date and proposed new course start on one sheet. Those dates expose gaps that a simple “school transfer” request can hide. You need to know what each institution will issue and which procedure the handling authority requires for your actual record.

Our education support in Chiang Mai can be discussed with those details. This guide helps you organise the transfer questions without promising a nationwide automatic transfer procedure or inventing a grace period after withdrawal.

Identify why you want to move

The reason for moving affects which course will solve the problem. If the level is wrong, first ask whether the present school can offer a suitable class. If the timetable conflicts with your routine, obtain the new school’s actual schedule. If you are moving home, test the journey to the proposed school rather than relying on its advertised location.

You may decide that changing institution is appropriate. The point of clarifying the reason is to avoid paying for the same mismatch elsewhere. Ask the new school for the course outline, level, class format and start date before considering its immigration documents.

Our language-school selection guide covers teaching and practical comparisons. A transfer should leave you with an educational arrangement you can attend, alongside a lawful immigration plan.

Put the current record in front of the adviser

Provide the passport identity details, visa or e-Visa relevant to the current stay, latest arrival stamp and subsequent extension. Give the current school’s name and course, actual permission end date and proposed new institution. Include planned travel and a passport change if relevant.

Do not assume the date on a course agreement is the immigration deadline. Equally, do not assume that the end date on the permission stamp allows you to ignore a change to the educational basis. Explain the withdrawal or transfer honestly and obtain a procedural assessment.

This guide does not state that every ED holder receives a particular number of days after stopping study. No universal grace period has been established by the official material reviewed here. Plan from the authority’s actual instruction for your case, rather than a number repeated in an online discussion.

What the old school needs to clarify

Ask for its withdrawal process and the proposed final enrollment or study date. Find out which records it can provide about your enrollment, study and any change. If a letter is needed, ask who issues it and what information the authority requires it to contain.

Keep tuition and immigration questions separate. An unpaid balance or refund disagreement concerns the course agreement, while the immigration procedure concerns permission and its basis. Both need resolution, but neither should be assumed to settle the other automatically.

Ask how you will receive your own relevant study records and copies of documents already issued for you. Keep communication factual and specific. A request naming the record and intended procedure is more useful than a demand for “all visa paperwork” without identifying what is needed.

What the new school must establish

Ask whether the particular course can support the intended procedure and which documents the institution can issue. Establish its relevant approval, course timetable and document lead time. A receipt for a deposit is evidence of payment, not proof that a complete immigration package exists.

The government’s private-education extension guidance describes a licensed institution, institutional confirmation and relevant public-agency confirmation, with stated exceptions. It also names TM.7, passport evidence, licensing evidence and a study-details letter as part of its extension foundation. The guidance is older and does not create an automatic school-transfer process.

Use that distinction in the discussion. The new school needs to show what it can provide for your procedure, while immigration determines how the changed educational basis must be handled. An institution’s confidence about its own documents cannot substitute for that procedural answer.

Question Who should answer first Why the answer is needed
When does my present enrollment end? Current school Establishes the educational timeline
What records will the current school issue? Current school Identifies available supporting evidence
What course will I actually attend? New school Confirms the proposed educational purpose
When is the full new school set ready? New school and any outside issuer Tests the document timeline
What immigration procedure applies? Handling authority using current records Establishes the lawful sequence
What money remains due or refundable? Relevant provider under written terms Prevents assumptions about commercial arrangements

Check the procedure before choosing a filing date

A change of institution may involve different steps depending on the existing permission, educational category and documents. Ask the handling authority what is required for your record, including any notification, cancellation, new application or extension step it identifies. This article does not prescribe the same sequence for every student.

, Immigration’s education status-change sheet states more than 15 days of permitted stay must remain and excludes overstay applications under that procedure. Those conditions should not be misread as a universal school-transfer deadline; first establish whether that is even the procedure your case needs.

Our education application routes distinguish initial applications, status changes and extensions. Use those names accurately when asking for a quote or school letter so each person knows the task under discussion.

Build a handover calendar with dependencies

List the current permission deadline, final enrollment date, new course start, document issue dates and any authority appointment. Add the person responsible for each action. This reveals whether a new school letter depends on another approval or whether a current-school document will be needed before the next submission.

Use “confirmed” only when a date or requirement has actually been established. “Expected” is useful for a school estimate, and “awaiting authority confirmation” identifies a procedural question. The different labels help prevent an optimistic document estimate becoming an assumed legal deadline.

If dates do not fit, resolve the sequence before paying more or withdrawing. Ask what lawful alternative is available using the actual record. A promise to finish paperwork later cannot create permission during a gap.

A hypothetical move between language schools

Imagine a student who wants to move because the current class is too elementary. The new school offers a suitable level but has not confirmed when its institutional documents will be complete. The student still holds permission supported by the current educational arrangement.

The first useful step is to establish the current school’s withdrawal and document process, while asking the new school for a complete document timeline. The student then obtains a procedural assessment using both timelines and the current permission record. They do not assume that paying the new school is the point at which immigration responsibility transfers.

Suppose the planned course begins before the paperwork can be ready. That is a dependency to resolve, not a reason to alter dates on a letter or pretend the student is still attending somewhere they have left. The plan should record the actual facts and follow the authority’s required sequence.

Review attendance and progress records honestly

Ask the present institution how relevant attendance and progress records are maintained and what can be provided. If you believe a record contains an error, request a correction through its process. Keep the response with your file so the issue is visible during review.

Do not ask either school to create records of lessons you did not attend. The new institution should know your real level and study history so it can place you appropriately. Our ED attendance guide explains how to clarify absence and record policies.

If you stopped attending before deciding to move, disclose that. It may change the discussion from a planned transfer to an assessment of an arrangement that has already ended. Concealing the date prevents the adviser from assessing the actual position.

Understand the financial commitment before paying twice

Request the old school’s written cancellation and refund terms and the new school’s enrollment terms. Identify what has already been delivered, what remains due and when new payments become committed. A transfer does not automatically establish a refund entitlement or cancel an earlier balance.

Ask any agency to describe its transfer-related assistance specifically. Document review, coordination with institutions and an immigration application are different tasks. Obtain the applicable written scope and exclusions rather than assuming a package for a person already on ED includes every possible school-change scenario.

This article does not replace or amend any provider’s payment, cancellation or refund conditions. Keep the relevant agreements and payment records together, and ask for unresolved terms to be explained before the next payment.

Keep travel outside the unresolved handover

Tell both the school coordinator and procedural adviser if you intend to leave Thailand during the change. Departure, return and any appointment need to fit the same plan. A re-entry permit preserves applicable existing permission; it does not create a new educational basis or add time beyond the underlying permission.

If the plan is not settled, avoid treating an overseas trip as an automatic reset. A future application abroad has its own jurisdiction and document requirements. Establish what you would apply for, where and with which institution’s evidence before relying on travel to resolve the transfer.

Questions before changing institutions

Can the new school simply take over the existing visa?

Do not assume so. The existing record and change of educational basis need assessment. Ask which procedure applies and which documents each institution must provide.

Should I stop attending once I pay the new school?

First clarify the agreed final enrollment date and immigration sequence. Payment to the new institution does not by itself establish that the old arrangement or its immigration consequences have been completed.

What is the next practical step?

Contact Visa Support Thailand with the current permission end date, both schools, intended final and new study dates, and available documents. Ask for the outstanding procedural questions and a handover checklist. The immediate deliverable should identify who issues the next document and what must be confirmed before withdrawal or payment.
