ED Visa Attendance: Questions to Ask Before Enrolling

Updated October 30, 2026.

Before enrolling on an ED-supported course, obtain the actual timetable and attendance policy. Ask how the school records attendance, how you report illness and what happens when you miss a lesson. A genuine study plan needs a schedule you can follow, and the educational purpose should match what you will actually do.

There is no responsible single attendance percentage I can give for every Thai school and ED procedure from the official material reviewed for this guide. Different courses and institutions have different structures. A percentage quoted by another student is not a substitute for your own course policy or the evidence requested by the authority handling your case.

I would treat an advertisement promising that attendance is unnecessary as a reason to pause the purchase and clarify the course. Our Chiang Mai education visa support should be discussed alongside your intended studies and present permission, so the course fits the plan from the beginning.

Attendance begins with the timetable

Ask for class days, lesson times, location, format and start date. Confirm whether the class is already running or depends on a future intake. A general statement that lessons are flexible does not tell you when you must attend or whether an appropriate group will be available.

Build travel time around the lessons. If class begins shortly after another commitment ends, consider whether the journey is realistic every week. A schedule that works once during enrollment week may be difficult over a full course. The purpose of checking this is to choose a commitment you can keep, not to find the smallest possible amount of study.

Ask whether the timetable changes by level or term. If you progress from an introductory course to a later stage, the available days may change. Establish how much notice the school gives and what options exist if the next schedule conflicts with your routine.

Understand what the school records

Request the school’s written attendance policy. Ask whether attendance is recorded by lesson, session or another unit and who maintains the record. Establish how a late arrival, early departure or partially attended class is treated. These are ordinary course-management questions that are easier to answer before there is a disagreement.

Ask how you can check your own record and correct an error. If you attended but were marked absent, the correction should be made through the school’s process while the lesson is recent. Keep relevant communication, such as an acknowledged illness notice, without assuming that an email alone changes the official attendance entry.

The school should also explain how attendance and progress information may support later documents. Do not assume an enrollment receipt establishes continued participation. Our school document guide helps distinguish what the institution issues from what you supply personally.

Situation Question to settle before enrollment Record to keep
Illness How and when must I notify the school? Acknowledged notice and any requested evidence
Planned travel Can the absence fit the course and procedure? Written explanation and agreed course arrangement
Missed lesson Are make-up classes available and on what terms? Booking or confirmation of the replacement lesson
Schedule change How are students informed and accommodated? Updated timetable
Attendance error Who can review and correct the record? School’s correction response
Withdrawal What happens to enrollment and supporting documents? Written withdrawal and immigration instructions

Separate a school policy from an immigration requirement

A school can describe its teaching calendar and attendance rules. The responsible authority determines immigration requirements and the permission granted. These roles interact, but they are not interchangeable. A school allowing an absence does not itself answer every question about travel or the basis of your stay.

The Royal Thai Embassy London’s education guidance describes study-related evidence and conditions for its ED applicants. It makes clear that extensions are decided by immigration and that breaching entry conditions can have consequences. Use the responsible authority’s instructions for your own route rather than treating one mission’s page as a universal attendance manual.

If an adviser quotes a numerical attendance requirement, ask where it comes from and which course or procedure it applies to. That is a request for scope, not an argument about the rule. A school-specific minimum may be relevant to its enrollment agreement without being a single nationwide figure for every ED holder.

Plan illness and unavoidable absences honestly

Ask how to report illness before it occurs. Save the correct contact and notification procedure. If the school requests evidence for a particular absence, ask what evidence it accepts and when it must be supplied. Do not assume that a friend passing on a message is enough.

If you become ill, contact the school promptly and describe the expected interruption as accurately as you can. Ask how missed teaching can be addressed and whether the interruption affects documents being prepared. A long absence may need a different conversation from a single missed class.

Do not request an attendance entry for a class you did not attend. An accurate record is better than a convenient record that cannot be supported. If a make-u ed visa attendance ed visa attendance ed visa attendance ed visa attendance

p class is available, confirm how it is booked, whether a fee applies and how completion appears in the school’s records.

Discuss travel before booking it

Give the school the proposed departure and return dates. Ask what teaching you would miss and whether the course arrangement can accommodate it. Then assess the immigration side separately: current permission, any pending procedure and applicable re-entry needs.

A holiday during a quiet part of the school calendar may still overlap an extension appointment. A return after the present permission expires is another issue entirely. Permission planning should use actual records, not the belief that tuition payment keeps the stay active until the course ends.

If you expect frequent trips, disclose that when choosing a school. The right question is whether your routine supports genuine participation in the course and the proposed immigration route. A promise to sort out absences after payment is less useful than a clear explanation before you commit.

Make-up lessons need concrete terms

Ask whether a replacement lesson is an entitlement under the course agreement or an option dependent on space. Find out whether it uses the same teaching format and level. A beginner missing one group session may have different catch-up needs from someone absent for several weeks.

Clarify the deadline for arranging a make-up and whether it changes the attendance record. Do not assume that studying alone or buying private tuition automatically satisfies every course policy. Ask the school how the proposed arrangement is recorded and whether additional charges apply.

Also ask what happens when the school cancels a class. A cancellation should not leave the student guessing whether the lesson counts as missed teaching, a scheduled holiday or a replacement date. Keep the revised timetable so later planning uses the correct class dates.

Progress matters alongside presence

Attending a class does not automatically mean the level suits you. Ask how the teacher checks progress and what happens if you struggle. A placement problem can make lessons less useful and discourage attendance, so deal with it early.

If you want conversational Thai, ask how speaking practice is organised and how correction works. If you want reading and writing, ask when those skills enter the syllabus. Your learning aim belongs in the school-selection decision. Our language-school comparison guide covers those questions.

Keep a realistic personal study routine as well. Ask what preparation the teacher expects between lessons and which materials are required. These questions help you assess the actual commitment instead of reducing the course to the number of hours on an attendance sheet.

A hypothetical timetable conflict

Imagine a student who can attend only on two evenings and enrolls after hearing that classes are flexible. The written schedule later shows that the relevant group meets on different days. The problem existed before enrollment, but neither side tested the word “flexible” against the student’s actual availability.

The useful correction is to establish whether an appropriate class genuinely exists, what a change would cost and how it affects enrollment and document preparation. It is not enough to agree that absences can be overlooked. The student needs a workable learning arrangement and an accurate record.

A second hypothetical student knows about an overseas trip before signing up. By giving the dates early, they can establish which classes and administrative stages would be affected before paying. The answer may change the start date, course choice or travel sequence. Each is easier to adjust before the commitment is fixed.

If you want to stop or change schools

Tell the current institution before simply disappearing from lessons. Ask about withdrawal, outstanding tuition matters and the documents needed to end or change the educational arrangement. Your current permission may depend on the basis being changed, so the immigration sequence needs assessment as well.

Our school-change guide explains why paying a new school does not automatically transfer the present immigration basis. Keep the current permission record, planned last study date and proposed new course available for that discussion.

Read the written cancellation and refund terms. An attendance problem does not itself establish what money will be returned. This article does not create or alter a refund entitlement; the applicable agreement and circumstances need to be read together.

Useful questions before payment

Is there one attendance percentage for every ED student?

The official material reviewed here does not establish a single percentage across all institutions and procedures. Obtain the particular school’s policy and the requirements for your route. Ask for the source and scope of any number quoted to you.

Does the school permitting travel mean immigration travel arrangements are complete?

No. Course attendance and immigration travel permission are separate matters. Check both using your actual departure, return and stay-expiry dates before relying on the plan.

What should I send for an assessment?

Contact Visa Support Thailand with your current category, stay-expiry date, course timetable and any known conflicts or trips. Ask which questions belong to the school and which need procedural assessment. The immediate aim is a course you can attend consistently, with clear absence rules and accurate documents.
