Extending an Education Stay in Chiang Mai: Preparing with Your School

Updated October 30, 2026.

An education extension continues your current permission to stay on an educational basis. It requires more than proof that you once enrolled. Your school needs to supply the current supporting evidence for the course and procedure, and you need to keep the actual permission deadline visible while that file is prepared.

Start with your latest stamp, the course you are attending and the school contact responsible for extension documents. I would ask for a dated preparation plan before waiting for an automatic reminder. The school controls some of the evidence; you remain responsible for understanding the period of stay actually granted.

Our education support in Chiang Mai can be discussed using those records. This guide explains the concrete document foundation, a useful division of work and the decisions that should happen before the application reaches its final days.

Know which procedure you are preparing

An extension inside Thailand differs from an ED visa application abroad and from changing a visitor’s status. The existing immigration record is therefore the starting point. If you are still on visitor permission, do not describe the application as an ED renewal merely because you have paid a school.

For an existing student, use the latest admission or extension record, not the course end date, to establish the present deadline. A course agreement can cover a longer study period than the permission currently granted. Read our education application-route guide if the distinction is unclear.

Identify whether the course is at a government institution, private school, international school or higher-education institution. Official guidance distinguishes these circumstances. Advice for a university student should not be copied automatically into a private language-school extension file.

The official starting requirements for private study

The government’s private-education extension guidance, attributed to Immigration Office, describes a non-immigrant starting category, a licensed institution, institutional confirmation and relevant public-agency confirmation, with exceptions stated for international schools and higher education. Its published information is older, so use it as a foundation and obtain the current handling office’s instructions.

The same source identifies TM.7, a passport copy, institutional licensing evidence, a school confirmation letter describing study details and academic results, and the relevant public-agency certificate where applicable. This is why an old enrollment receipt alone does not establish a complete extension file.

Document or record Who normally controls it What to check
TM.7 application Applicant with agreed assistance Correct extension procedure and current details
Passport and current permission Applicant Latest record and clear copies
Institutional licensing evidence Institution Relevant school and accepted document set
Confirmation and request concerning continued study Institution Student details, course and results information
Public-agency confirmation where applicable Issuing authority, coordinated with institution Whether the exception or requirement applies
Additional local evidence Applicant and relevant issuer Current handling-office checklist

What your school letter needs to describe

The published foundation concerns the actual educational arrangement, including study details and results. Ask the school what information its letter will contain and which records it uses. The school should describe your course accurately; the applicant should not rewrite the institution’s letter to make it appear suitable.

Check your name and passport number before the letter is signed. Then check the course title and study period against the course you are taking. If there was a level change or a break, tell the document coordinator so the record can be reviewed before the file is completed.

If a public authority must provide another document, ask which institution-controlled step starts that request. Your file may depend on more than one issuer. An expected date for the school’s own letter does not necessarily mean the full extension set will be ready on the same date.

Confirm filing timing without inventing a local window

Ask the office handling your application when it accepts filing and what appointment process applies. This guide does not promise that a particular early-filing window applies to every Chiang Mai student. Record the confirmed procedure and prepare around it.

Give the school the present permission end date and your intended submission date. Ask when it needs your passport copies and other information. Set an earlier internal date for checking the file so the appointment is not the first time anyone notices an incorrect number or missing signature.

If the deadline is already close, say so at the first enquiry. A document being prepared and an appointment request do not themselves extend permission. Ask for a procedural assessment using the actual dates instead of relying on an assurance that schools usually handle these matters.

Keep attendance and progress records accurate

Ask the school how its attendance and progress information supports extension documents. Follow its notification process for illness or another unavoidable absence. Where an entry is wrong, request a correction through the institution while the facts are recent.

Do not assume there is one attendance percentage across every school and ED procedure. Ask for the policy and applicable requirement for your course. Our attendance guideextending an education checklist

> explains the questions without inventing a universal number.

If you have stopped studying, are considering withdrawal or cannot follow the timetable, raise that fact before requesting a routine continuation letter. The immigration plan needs to reflect the real educational arrangement. A document file should not hide a change that affects its basis.

Divide preparation into work you can finish early and dated items

Collect stable identity records and review changed facts first. Check whether your passport, address, course or travel history differs from the information used for the last application. Tell the coordinator about a new passport number before several documents repeat the old one.

Next, obtain the institutional document plan and current local checklist. Identify what needs an original, signature or certification. Finally, arrange any dated supporting evidence within the authority’s requirements. This order reduces unnecessary reissuing without assuming all documents share the same validity period.

Our ED document responsibility guide provides a tracker structure. Use separate statuses for requested, received and checked. A document that has arrived with an error is not ready for submission.

Check the budget for this stage

An annual tuition arrangement does not by itself establish that every later document service, official charge or agency task is included. Read the written scope and identify what remains to be paid at extension stage. Ask who makes any government payment and how you receive the receipt.

Visa Support Thailand’s confirmed starting reference for a person already on ED is 48,000 baht; tourist-to-ED transfer is a different 54,000 baht reference. Those figures should be matched to the applicable service agreement rather than treated as a universal extension charge. Do not infer government fees or package inclusions from the price label alone.

Keep payment, cancellation and refund conditions with the quotation. If additional work becomes necessary, ask what it covers and approve the cost through the agreed process. This guide does not alter any written service terms.

A hypothetical extension preparation sequence

Imagine a student who has continued at the same school but recently renewed a passport and moved accommodation. Their tuition is paid for the continuing course. The first review identifies the present permission deadline and confirms that the next procedure is an extension, rather than an embassy application.

The student gives the school the new passport details and asks which continuity evidence is needed. They resolve residence evidence using the current local checklist. The school confirms the date its complete institutional set can be provided, including any required outside confirmation. The student then schedules the submission within the accepted procedure.

Before filing, they check the final documents together and keep copies. After the decision, they read the new stamp and any instruction. Their tuition receipt remains a course-payment record; the immigration decision establishes the new permission. This sequence identifies changes early without pretending that prior approval makes the next result automatic.

Travel and school changes require a separate review

Tell the coordinator about departure and return dates before fixing the submission plan. A trip can overlap personal attendance or a follow-up, and an applicable re-entry permit preserves existing permission rather than creating extra time. The school approving an absence does not complete the immigration side of travel.

If you intend to change institutions, explain that before the current school prepares ordinary continuation documents. Our school-change guide explains the need to coordinate the old and new educational basis. Paying the new institution does not automatically transfer the existing stay.

Where the plan remains unresolved, name the question explicitly: who will issue the next letter, what happens to the old enrollment and which procedure the authority requires. A generic “renewal in progress” label hides these dependencies.

At submission and after the result

Bring the originals and copies requested by the office. Keep the submission set accessible and separate from old drafts. If an additional item is requested, obtain the exact document description, required period or format, and deadline. Then assign the action to the person who can actually obtain it.

Keep any receipt and written instruction. If you receive a return appointment, put that actual date on the calendar. Do not replace it with an approximate processing time from another student’s experience.

Once permission is granted, check the identifying details and stay end date. Update extension, reporting and travel reminders separately. Store the final school evidence with the decision so the next preparation cycle begins from the correct record.

Questions about education extensions

Does a 90-day report renew my ED stay?

No. Reporting an address and extending permission are different tasks. Their dates may be close, but one does not automatically complete the other. Track the actual records for both.

Does a year of tuition guarantee a year of permission?

No. Tuition describes the educational purchase. Immigration decides the permission granted and any later requirements. Use each decision to update your stay calendar.

What is the best first step if I need an extension soon?

Contact Visa Support Thailand with your latest permission end date, school, course and any changed passport, address or travel plans. Ask for the procedure-specific missing-item list and a document schedule. That gives the school and applicant a concrete next action before the remaining preparation time is consumed.
