Education Visa Application Routes: Applying Abroad, Changing Status and Extending a Stay

Updated October 30, 2026.

An education visa application abroad, a change of status inside Thailand and an extension of an existing education stay are separate procedures. Your current record determines which question to ask first. A school enrollment agreement can support the process, but it does not choose or complete the immigration procedure for you.

If you are outside Thailand and need a visa for study, begin with the responsible embassy or consulate. If you are visiting Thailand and want to move into an education category, ask whether an in-country change is available for your circumstances. If you already have an ED stay and need to continue studying, the immediate issue may be an extension. I would write that starting position at the top of every enquiry so everyone is discussing the same task.

Our Chiang Mai education visa service can be discussed once your current category and dates are clear. This guide helps you distinguish the routes before ordering school letters or making travel commitments.

Start with evidence of where you stand

Use the passport identity page, issued visa or e-Visa, most recent arrival stamp and any later extension record. The category of a visa and the date you may remain are related but different facts. A previous visa sticker may no longer describe your current permission accurately if later decisions changed it.

Record your actual location, nationality, passport expiry, current permission end date and the intended course. Add planned international travel. These details affect who can accept an application, whether there is enough time to assemble evidence and what the school needs to prepare. A course advertisement cannot answer those questions.

If you are unsure which date or category to use, provide a legible copy of the relevant record through the requested secure contact method. Guessing “tourist” or “one year” can lead an adviser to assess the wrong starting position. The three-date checklist explains how to separate visa validity, permission to stay and reporting.

Your starting position First procedural question Main document source
Outside Thailand, planning study Which mission accepts my application? Mission checklist and school evidence
Inside Thailand on visitor permission Can my current status be changed for this course? Handling immigration office and school
Already studying under ED permission What supports the next extension? Immigration checklist and current institution
Leaving or changing schools What happens to the present educational basis? Both institutions and immigration

Applying through an embassy or consulate

A visa application abroad starts with jurisdiction. The Thai e-Visa website is the official starting point, but you still need the instructions of the mission responsible for your application. Tell the school which mission you will use before it prepares the final letters. Documents addressed to the wrong authority or describing a different course can require correction.

Read the section for your type of education. University study, school education and a language course do not necessarily share the same supporting evidence. The Royal Thai Embassy London’s education guidance illustrates this with separately labelled study categories and institutional letters. That mission’s checklist is useful for its applicants; it should not be treated as a universal list for every country or an in-country change.

Ask the mission about unclear eligibility or location requirements before paying for travel. An online account and an uploaded application do not demonstrate that you are entitled to apply through that mission. Keep your application reference, the documents you submitted and any further-document request together. If something changes after submission, follow the mission’s procedure for notifying it.

What happens after a visa is issued?

Read the issued record for its validity, entry conditions and permitted purpose. Plan travel within those conditions and carry accessible copies of the educational evidence relevant to your trip. On arrival, check the permission actually recorded by immigration rather than calculating an assumed end date from the visa label.

The next stage may involve an extension in Thailand. Ask the school when it will prepare the evidence for that stage and who is responsible for monitoring the deadline. Visa issuance abroad does not remove later obligations associated with the stay.

The published in-country lead time and application forms

Immigration’s education status-change document sheet says the remaining permitted stay must be more than 15 days and that an applicant on overstay cannot use this procedure. It describes permission not exceeding 90 days. Treat this as a minimum procedural condition, not a sensible target for starting school paperwork: a missing letter can consume the margin quickly. Confirm the handling office’s requirements before relying on the minimum.

The sheet distinguishes TM.86 for a person holding a tourist or transit visa from TM.87 for the listed visa-exempt admission categories. It also requests passport evidence and educational documents. This is why calling every visitor stamp a tourist visa can result in the wrong form. The correct form follows the actual admission record.

Requesting a change of status inside Thailand

An in-country change is a request to immigration based on your present permission and proposed educational purpose. It is a separate assessment from admission to a school. A provider should review the record and the time available before treating the change as your agreed plan.

Ask the handling office which entry categories it can consider, how much remaining permission it requires and what school approvals must accompany the applicatio

education visa application should be checked against your current status, documents and the written scope of the service.

n. These details need confirmation for the actual case. Do not use another person’s successful timeline as a filing rule or assume that paying tuition stops the current permission clock.

The sequence matters. You need a course that suits you, confirmation of the documents the institution can issue, enough time to obtain them and a procedure the authority will accept. If one of those dependencies remains unresolved, label it clearly in the plan. A checklist marked “almost ready” can hide a missing institutional approval that determines whether filing is possible.

If there is little time remaining

Tell the adviser the exact expiry date immediately. Ask what lawful options are available while avoiding assumptions about an extension, conversion or travel route. A school receipt, an appointment request and an application being prepared do not by themselves establish new permission to stay.

Avoid committing to non-refundable plans merely because someone expects a letter soon. Ask when the complete file can be ready and whether that date fits the confirmed filing requirements. If the dates do not fit, the plan needs to change before money and travel make it harder to adjust.

Extending an existing education stay

An extension concerns the permission you currently hold. Start with the latest stamp, the institution supporting your studies and the course evidence requested for continued study. Ask the school about its document preparation process early enough to identify omissions.

Keep the course calendar and immigration calendar separate. Tuition may cover a period longer than a single permission granted by immigration. A class continuing next month does not prove that your present stamp permits you to remain until then. Conversely, a school holiday does not tell you that an immigration deadline moves.

Review changes since the last application: a new passport, moved accommodation, international travel, a different course or a change of institution. Tell the document coordinator about them before letters are finalised. Our education extension preparation guide deals with this stage in more detail.

Give each document a named owner

The applicant usually holds the personal identity and immigration records. The institution controls its own enrollment and educational evidence. The authority decides what it needs for the procedure. A coordinator can help assemble those parts, but clear responsibility still matters.

Use a shared list with the item, issuer, expected availability, checked status and any unresolved question. For example, “school letter” is too broad if the file needs a signed enrollment letter and separate authority evidence. List them separately using the checklist’s wording. The ED document guide explains this division.

Check the final set together. Matching names, passport numbers and course dates across documents is more useful than checking each page in isolation. If an issuer made a mistake, ask it to issue a corrected document. Do not edit an official letter yourself to save time.

Three hypothetical students, three different discussions

A student outside Thailand has an offer for a language course. Their first task is identifying the responsible mission and confirming the course evidence it accepts. They should tell the school that destination before requesting the final file. Their budget also needs to address any application-location and travel costs that follow from the plan.

A visitor already in Thailand wants to begin the same course. Their first task is a review of current permission and the availability of an in-country change. The school offer helps describe the proposed study, but an embassy checklist does not establish eligibility for the local procedure. The visitor’s remaining days make document lead time especially important.

An existing ED student wants to continue with the current school. Their discussion starts with the next permission deadline and current institutional evidence. They should not assume that the first student’s embassy package is what they need. If they are changing school instead, that change needs its own coordinated review before either institution treats the transfer as complete.

Compare costs after selecting the procedure

Visa Support Thailand’s confirmed price references distinguish 48,000 baht for a person already on ED from 54,000 baht for a tourist-to-ED transfer. The applicable written quotation must explain the work and exclusions. Those figures do not promise that every applicant can use the route named in the price category.

Ask whether the quotation covers tuition, institutional documents, service assistance and any later stages. Government charges must be identified separately where excluded. Also obtain the written payment, cancellation and refund terms. Route assessment and a complete scope give the figures meaning; comparing advertisements before that can disguise different services.

Questions that reveal an incomplete plan

Can I submit an e-Visa application while remaining in Thailand?

Confirm the responsible mission’s location and jurisdiction conditions. An online application should never be treated as an automatic alternative to an in-country change. It also does not extend your current Thai permission.

Can the school promise which stay period I will receive?

The school can state its course period and the documents it supplies. Immigration decides the permission granted. Read the result and any follow-up instruction, then update your calendar from that record.

What if I plan a trip during the process?

Give the actual departure and return dates before the procedure is selected. Travel may affect availability, current permission and re-entry planning. The correct sequence depends on the record and stage of the application, so avoid relying on a general assurance that travel is always fine.

To establish your next step, contact Visa Support Thailand with your present category, permission end date, course and location. Ask for the proposed procedure, its handling authority and the outstanding documents. Those answers should come before a final package decision.
