Travel During an ED Stay: School Dates, Re-Entry and Return Checks

Updated October 30, 2026.

You can plan an overseas trip during an education stay, but check your school commitments and your immigration permission before paying for the journey. For an ordinary ED permission that requires a re-entry permit, arrange that permit before departure and return while the underlying permission remains valid. A school agreeing to your absence does not complete the immigration side of the trip.

I would begin with three dates on one sheet: departure, return and the last day of your current permission. Then add the school dates you cannot miss. This makes the awkward combinations visible early, especially a return after your permission ends or a holiday that overlaps collection of extension documents.

What to check before booking

  • Read the category and entry conditions on your actual visa and current permission record.
  • Give the school your travel dates and obtain its absence or attendance instructions.
  • Resolve any extension appointment or document collection that falls during the trip.
  • Check whether a re-entry permit is needed and how to obtain it before departure.
  • Keep your return date within the permission you intend to preserve, unless another lawful entry route has been established.

School permission and immigration permission cover different things

A school can explain its course schedule, attendance policy and the documents it is able to issue. Immigration decides permission to remain and the conditions of admission. Keeping those responsibilities separate helps you ask the right person a precise question instead of expecting one letter to settle everything.

The Royal Thai Embassy London’s standard ED guidance says a required re-entry permit must be obtained before leaving to preserve the current stay. That is a published example for the category described there. Read your own record and check the rules for your specific scheme, particularly if it has entry conditions different from an ordinary ED stay.

School holidays can be convenient travel periods, but they do not change the dates in your passport. Conversely, a trip that fits your immigration dates can still conflict with a course assessment or the school’s requirements for issuing extension paperwork. Ask about both before assuming the trip works.

Put the relevant records next to each other

Use the current passport, visa or e-Visa, latest admission stamp and any extension. If you already hold a re-entry permit, read its details as well. Check that you are using the most recent permission record; an older stamp can remain in the passport after another decision changes your position.

Our three-date guide explains visa validity, permission to stay and reporting dates. For travel planning, the important question is which permission your proposed re-entry would preserve. A visa label alone will not answer that.

Record What to read Travel question
Issued visa or e-Visa Category, validity and entry conditions Can it be used for the intended journey under its conditions?
Latest permission stamp Last authorised day of the present stay Will that permission still be valid when you return?
Existing re-entry permit Type, validity and identifying details Does it cover the proposed departure and return?
School calendar Classes, assessments and document dates Can you maintain the course requirements around the trip?
Reporting receipt Reporting date and relevant instructions What reporting action needs reviewing after travel?

Ask the school about the actual dates

Send the departure and return dates in writing. Include the lessons or assessment days you expect to miss, then ask how the absence will be recorded. If you need an extension soon, ask when the school can issue the supporting documents and whether you must collect or sign anything in person.

An email saying “travel is fine” may leave useful details unanswered. Ask whether the reply covers attendance only, whether a missed assessment must be rearranged and whether the school can still provide the documents needed for your next immigration step. Keep the reply with your course agreement.

For example, someone planning two weeks away might return before their stay expires but miss the date the school expects them to collect extension letters. Moving the document collection, changing the trip or resolving the next application beforehand could each produce a different plan. The school’s actual timetable should decide which questions you pursue.

You can use our ED attendance guide to organise those questions. Do not substitute a percentage quoted by another institution for your own course policy.

Review extension timing before buying tickets

Write down your current stay-expiry date and ask the handling immigration office when it accepts the next application. Separately, obtain the school’s document-production timetable. The point is to identify whether the two can fit around your trip, with room for corrections or a request to return.

If an extension application is already pending, show the adviser or office the receipt and any written return instruction. Ask how travel affects that particular application. Avoid relying on a friend’s experience from another category or office. A pending application

can raise questions that a routine holiday during an already-granted stay does not.

Our Chiang Mai ED extension guide covers the preparation side. Bring your actual dates to the discussion so the advice can address a real sequence of events.

Single or multiple re-entry: use the trips you expect to make

If a re-entry permit is required, compare the options against travel during the remaining permission period. A permit attached to the existing stay does not create extra months beyond that stay. The more expensive option cannot solve a return scheduled after the underlying permission ends.

For one planned journey, ask about the single option. If several journeys are planned, ask about the multiple option and its applicable conditions. Verify the current fee, form, photographs, originals and submission location with the office handling the application. The single-versus-multiple comparison guide helps you organise that choice.

Do not build an itinerary around an assumed airport counter or opening time. Confirm that the intended service is available for your flight and circumstances. Allow enough time to resolve the permit before departure instead of leaving the immigration task until you are committed to boarding.

Two worked travel scenarios

These examples use imaginary dates to explain the decision. They are not individual immigration advice or accounts of VST clients.

Returning before the current stay ends

A student’s current permission ends on December 20. The proposed trip is November 5 to November 15. The first check is whether the required re-entry arrangement preserves that permission. The second is whether those ten days fit the course. The third is whether any extension-document appointment occurs while the student is away.

Even if those checks are resolved, the student should read the new arrival stamp on return. The journey does not remove the need to prepare for the December expiry. Keep the school’s next paperwork date and the immigration deadline in the calendar rather than treating the return as a new course year.

Returning after the current stay ends

Another student’s permission ends on December 10, while the proposed return is December 18. Obtaining a re-entry permit for the existing permission would not make that later date fall within it. Before paying for the trip, the student needs to review whether the existing permission can be extended in the proper sequence or whether a different application route is required.

That review needs the school timetable and actual immigration documents. Buying a return ticket or extending tuition does not itself grant permission to return on the expired stay. Resolve the route before assuming an airline booking settles the matter.

Prepare a small return folder

Keep the relevant records accessible while travelling, including a copy available without depending on your phone’s internet connection. Protect personal details and keep the original passport secure.

  • Passport and issued visa or e-Visa record.
  • Current extension and re-entry evidence, where applicable.
  • School contact details and relevant enrolment information.
  • Accommodation details for the return journey.
  • Copies of any written immigration instructions affecting the trip.

Check separate arrival formalities through the official channels shortly before travelling. The documents preserving an existing ED permission and an arrival-information form perform different jobs. For background, read the TDAC guide.

Read the arrival stamp before filing it away

Compare the return entry record with the permission you expected to preserve. If a date or category appears inconsistent, raise it with immigration while the journey and documents are readily available. Do not silently replace an official date with your own calculation.

After the trip, review address reporting separately and ask what applies to your current continuous stay. Tell the school that you have returned if its procedure requires that notification. Keep the travel records available for later extension preparation.

Questions students ask about travel

Can the school’s approval replace a re-entry permit?

No. The school addresses educational commitments. Obtain the required immigration permission through the proper process before leaving.

Does a re-entry permit add another 90 days?

It does not extend the underlying permission. Read the current stay-expiry date and the conditions applying to your return.

Can I arrange a required permit after departure?

Do not plan on a retrospective permit. Resolve the applicable requirement before leaving Thailand.

What should I send VST before asking about my trip?

Send your current visa category, stay-expiry date, proposed departure and return dates, and the date your school can supply extension documents. You can ask about ED travel planning or book a consultation. Those details let the discussion focus on the part of the plan that needs attention.
