International Travel on a Retirement Extension: Protecting Your Permission to Stay

A retirement extension and an international trip need to fit the same permission timeline. Before departure, review the permission you want to preserve and the documents required to return on it.

Check the three relevant dates

Write down your permission-to-stay end date, departure date and planned return date. A return after the current permission ends cannot be solved by assuming a re-entry permit adds more time.

Check whether you need a re-entry permit

A re-entry permit is a separate immigration procedure used to preserve an existing permission when applicable. Confirm the requirement for your current record before leaving. Do not confuse a multiple-entry visa with a re-entry permit attached to an extension.

Single or multiple?

Compare the actual number of planned trips within the remaining permission period. Immigration’s public handbook lists separate single and multiple re-entry options. Check the current charges and application procedure with the office where you will apply.

Prepare before the departure day

  1. Review the permission stamp and passport validity.
  2. Confirm the applicable re-entry procedure.
  3. Arrange the permit before departure if needed.
  4. Keep copies of the permission and permit.
  5. Review any renewal or follow-up appointment that overlaps the trip.

Do not build an itinerary around an assumed airport service location or opening time. Verify the service you intend to use before relying on it.

Check the arrival record

After returning, read the stamp and compare it with the permission you expected to preserve. Keep the travel record for the next extension and ask about the next address-reporting date.

Frequently asked questions

Does a re-entry permit renew my retirement extension?

No. It does not extend the underlying stay period.

Should I renew before travelling?

Review your dates and the local filing window. The correct sequence depends on the existing expiry date and the proposed trip.
