LTR Visa Reforms: What BOI’s 2025 Changes Mean for a 2026 Application

Thailand’s Long-Term Resident programme changed in 2025, but “LTR became easier” is not a complete eligibility assessment. Identify the category and then use BOI’s current qualification and document instructions.

What BOI announced

BOI’s January 15, 2025 release described removing the five-year work-experience requirement for the Highly Skilled and Work-from-Thailand categories, lowering the overseas-employer revenue threshold, and removing the annual-income requirement for Wealthy Global Citizens. The release also described broader target sectors and changes to dependant eligibility.

What those changes do not establish

Removing one requirement does not remove every requirement in the category. A Wealthy Global Citizen assessment still needs the applicable asset and investment evidence. A remote professional should assess the employer and employment criteria rather than assuming any freelance arrangement qualifies.

Use current operational guidance

Read the official LTR programme site and category-specific document lists. If a historical announcement and a current checklist appear inconsistent, ask the LTR unit which instructions govern your application, especially for family members.

Prepare a category worksheet

  1. The category you propose to use.
  2. The current criteria under that category.
  3. The document supporting each criterion.
  4. Any condition that must continue after issuance.
  5. Questions requiring BOI confirmation.

Keep the qualification-endorsement process distinct from subsequent visa issuance. BOI’s issuance guidance explains that the ten-year programme includes an initial permission period and later rechecking of qualifications; it should not be described as unconditional ten-year permission.

Frequently asked questions

Does the reform mean every digital nomad qualifies?

No. Check the relevant category and its remaining conditions.

Should I rely on a 2025 press release alone?

No. Use it to understand the reform, then follow the current application guidance for your category.
