A couple’s shared retirement plan does not establish that both people will use the same immigration route. Build a separate eligibility and document file for each person before coordinating the applications.
Check each person’s basis of stay
Record age, nationality, passport validity, current visa and intended length of stay separately. Ask whether each person qualifies independently or whether a family-based route should be assessed. Do not assume marriage automatically adds a spouse to an existing retirement permission.
Separate shared evidence from individual evidence
Accommodation and relationship records may be relevant to both files, while passport, application and immigration records remain individual. Financial evidence must meet the conditions of the route used by each applicant. Ask the responsible authority how joint accounts or shared documents will be treated before relying on them.
Coordinate deadlines without combining them
Create two calendar rows with permission expiry, reporting date, financial-document timing and travel arrangements. Even when appointments are on the same day, check the result stamped or issued for each person.
If one person’s circumstances change
A new passport, a change in the principal applicant’s status or a plan to live apart temporarily can affect the questions you need to resolve. Raise the change before renewing or travelling rather than assuming the original family arrangement still applies.
Documents to discuss at the initial review
- Both passports and current immigration records.
- Marriage or other relationship evidence where relevant.
- Proposed independent or family-based route for each person.
- Financial evidence appropriate to each route.
- Arrival, departure and renewal plans.
Frequently asked questions
Must both spouses hold retirement visas?
Ask for an assessment of each person’s eligibility and the available family route rather than assuming one arrangement fits every couple.
Can one person’s completed report cover the other?
Check each individual’s reporting and immigration record. Keep separate confirmations.
