Joining Family in Thailand: Thai Relatives and Foreign Dependants Compared

Family immigration planning depends on who you are joining and the status that person holds. A Thai spouse, a foreign worker and a DTV holder can involve different supporting routes.

Describe the family connection precisely

List the relationship, age where relevant, nationality and status of the person in Thailand. London’s family guidance distinguishes Thai-family and non-Thai-family cases. Its DTV guidance separately describes that visa’s eligible family category.

Check the supporting person’s record

Where the route relies on a foreign family member, ask which passport, visa, permission or employment records are needed. Check the dates so the supporting status and the applicant’s proposed stay are understood together.

Prepare an individual file for each applicant

  • Identity and photograph.
  • Relationship documents.
  • Supporting family member’s status evidence.
  • Financial and residence evidence requested.
  • Translations and certifications required by the authority.

A family group can share a planning sheet, but each application should remain complete and traceable. Keep separate application references and issued decisions.

Discuss later changes before they occur

Ask what to do if the supporting family member changes job, visa category or address, or if the family plans to travel on different dates. Do not assume an application route stays suitable after the facts supporting it change.

Children’s records

Check names, dates of birth and the relationship shown in official documents. Ask the responsible authority about any age condition and additional parental documents required for the proposed route.

Frequently asked questions

Can any relative sponsor a family visa?

Check the categories and relationship conditions of the actual route. Family connection alone does not establish eligibility.

Does each family member need their own immigration calendar?

Yes. Record each person’s decision, permission end date and reporting requirements separately.
