The DTV’s visa validity and the permission granted for an individual entry are different clocks. Understanding both helps you plan travel and avoid treating a long-validity visa as uninterrupted permission to remain.
The visa clock
The published DTV framework provides five-year validity with multiple entries. Check the actual validity dates and conditions on the issued visa. Those dates concern use of the visa and should be recorded separately from an admission stamp.
The stay clock
The framework describes 180 days per entry and one possible extension not exceeding 180 days for that entry. An extension is an immigration application; it is not automatically added when you receive the visa.
Use the actual permission record for your calendar
- Record the visa’s validity end date.
- After entry, record the permission-to-stay end date.
- If applying for an extension, confirm the local procedure and filing window.
- After a decision, record the new permission date and any instruction.
- Plan departure or the next lawful step from that record.
For example, a visa that remains valid for several years does not excuse staying beyond the permission granted on the current entry. The longer visa clock cannot replace the shorter stay clock.
Keep reporting separate
Ask about address-reporting obligations for your actual length of continuous stay. A reporting receipt is not an extension decision and does not change the permission date in your passport.
Frequently asked questions
Does DTV mean five years without leaving Thailand?
No. Follow the conditions for each entry and any extension granted.
Can I assume the maximum extension before applying?
No. Plan from the permission already granted until the extension application is decided.
